Tarabalam for Uttara Phalguni

  7. Naidhana (totally bad): when the Moon is in Jyeshtha, Revati and Ashlesha; the weakest tara; avoid new beginnings.
  8. Mitra (good): when the Moon is in Mula, Ashwini and Magha; friendship and support.
  9. Parama Mitra (good): when the Moon is in Purva Ashadha, Bharani and Purva Phalguni; the closest support.

How these times are calculated

All times are in IST, computed from the Moon's sidereal position with the Lahiri ayanamsa: the Thirukanitha method, the same basis Drik Panchang uses. Vakya panchangams, which many Tamil calendars still print, can differ by around 30 minutes at a star change. Days here run midnight to midnight; panchangams that start the day at sunrise show early-morning changes under the previous date.

Is Uttara Phalguni's Chandrashtama the same as Hasta's?

By rasi, yes: both follow the Kanni Rasi window. By star, no: Tamil panchangams list Uttara Phalguni when the Moon is in Ashwini and Hasta when it is in Bharani, so their star-level days fall about a day apart inside or next to that window.

Why does my calendar show Uttara Phalguni under Chandrashtama on only one day?

Daily panchangams list Chandrashtama by star: the day's entry names the stars whose 17th star the Moon is in. Uttara Phalguni appears while the Moon is in Ashwini, about a day, whereas the Kanni Rasi window lasts about two and a quarter days.

Which Moon stars are weakest for Uttara Phalguni?

Naidhana tara, the weakest, comes when the Moon is in Jyeshtha, Revati and Ashlesha. Vipat (Chitra, Dhanishta and Mrigashira) and Pratyak (Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada and Punarvasu) are also unfavourable for starting new work.
