Ashwini Chandrashtama Days 2026-2027: Dates & Times

Chandrashtama is read two ways. By Janma Rasi, people born in Ashwini follow the Mesha Rasi window, when the Moon passes through the 8th sign from Mesha. Tamil daily panchangams also mark it by star: the day the Moon is in Anuradha, the 17th star from Ashwini. This page lists both, for every month of 2026 and 2027.

Ashwini nakshatra, which falls under the Mesha Rasi used for its Chandrashtama dates

Ashwini sits in the Mesha Rasi, so the rasi window below is the Mesha one; the star-level day is the Moon in Anuradha.

Ashwini Nature: Known for speed, healing energy, and a desire for new beginnings.

Deity: Ashwini Kumaras

Next time the Moon is in Ashwini: Sun, 22 Nov, 5:55 am – Mon, 23 Nov, 4:16 am IST. See today's nakshatra →

Anuradha lies wholly inside Vrichigam, the sign the Moon occupies during this rasi window. So for Ashwini the two methods never disagree: the star-level day always falls within the rasi window and narrows it from about two and a quarter days to about one.

Tarabalam for Ashwini

Tarabalam rates any day by the star the Moon is in, counted from Ashwini. The count repeats every nine stars, so each of the nine taras comes from three Moon stars. Check the day's star in any panchangam and read its tara below.

  1. Janma (not good): when the Moon is in Ashwini, Magha and Mula; the Moon is back in your own star; keep the day light.
  2. Sampat (very good): when the Moon is in Bharani, Purva Phalguni and Purva Ashadha; wealth and gains.
  3. Vipat (bad): when the Moon is in Krittika, Uttara Phalguni and Uttara Ashadha; obstacles and losses.
  4. Kshema (good): when the Moon is in Rohini, Hasta and Shravana; well-being and safety.
  5. Pratyak (not good): when the Moon is in Mrigashira, Chitra and Dhanishta; opposition and friction.
  6. Sadhaka (very good): when the Moon is in Ardra, Swati and Shatabhisha; achievement; good for starting work.
  7. Naidhana (totally bad): when the Moon is in Punarvasu, Vishakha and Purva Bhadrapada; the weakest tara; avoid new beginnings.
  8. Mitra (good): when the Moon is in Pushya, Anuradha and Uttara Bhadrapada; friendship and support.
  9. Parama Mitra (good): when the Moon is in Ashlesha, Jyeshtha and Revati; the closest support.

During the rasi Chandrashtama window the tara for Ashwini is Naidhana, Mitra, Parama Mitra, the same every month.

How these times are calculated

All times are in IST, computed from the Moon's sidereal position with the Lahiri ayanamsa: the Thirukanitha method, the same basis Drik Panchang uses. Vakya panchangams, which many Tamil calendars still print, can differ by around 30 minutes at a star change. Days here run midnight to midnight; panchangams that start the day at sunrise show early-morning changes under the previous date.

Ashwini Chandrashtama: common questions

Is Ashwini's Chandrashtama the same as Bharani's?

By rasi, yes: both follow the Mesha Rasi window. By star, no: Tamil panchangams list Ashwini when the Moon is in Anuradha and Bharani when it is in Jyeshtha, so their star-level days fall about a day apart inside or next to that window.

Why does my calendar show Ashwini under Chandrashtama on only one day?

Daily panchangams list Chandrashtama by star: the day's entry names the stars whose 17th star the Moon is in. Ashwini appears while the Moon is in Anuradha, about a day, whereas the Mesha Rasi window lasts about two and a quarter days.

Which Moon stars are weakest for Ashwini?

Naidhana tara, the weakest, comes when the Moon is in Punarvasu, Vishakha and Purva Bhadrapada. Vipat (Krittika, Uttara Phalguni and Uttara Ashadha) and Pratyak (Mrigashira, Chitra and Dhanishta) are also unfavourable for starting new work.
