Questions about today’s nakshatra

What is today's nakshatra?

Today's nakshatra is the star of the day: the one of the 27 nakshatras the Moon is passing through. It is the star printed against each date in a Tamil calendar or panchangam (today natchathiram). The Moon moves through about one nakshatra a day, so on most days the star changes once, and on some days twice. Each nakshatra has four padas, and the Moon's rasi changes at the pada boundaries of some stars, so a day can have two rasis as well.

How is it calculated?

The 27 nakshatras divide the sidereal zodiac into equal parts of 13°20′, starting with Ashwini at 0° Mesha, and each has four padas of 3°20′. We take the Moon's geocentric longitude, subtract the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa that most Indian panchangams use, and find the moment it crosses each boundary, to the minute. These are the same Moon positions behind every Chandrashtama time on this site. Another panchangam may differ by a minute or two from rounding.

Today's nakshatra vs Chandrashtama: what's the difference?

Today's nakshatra says where the Moon is, and it is the same for everyone. Chandrashtama depends on your birth rasi: it is the 2 to 2½ days when the Moon is in the 8th rasi from yours. So the Moon's star changes every day, while Chandrashtama falls on a different rasi each time. If you know your rasi or birth star, check whether today is your Chandrashtama.

Why does my calendar show a different star for today?

Printed Tamil calendars name the star in force at sunrise and give its end time. This page shows every star in force at any time between midnight and midnight IST, with its start and end, so a star that ends before sunrise appears here too.

Are the times in IST? I live in Malaysia, Singapore, the UAE, the UK or the US.

All times are Indian Standard Time (IST, UTC+5:30), and each day runs from midnight to midnight IST. The Moon changes star at the same instant everywhere; only the clock time differs. From IST: Malaysia and Singapore +2:30, Sri Lanka the same, UAE −1:30, UK −5:30 (−4:30 in summer time), US Eastern −10:30 (−9:30 in summer), US Pacific −13:30 (−12:30 in summer). So 7:40 am IST is 10:10 am in Kuala Lumpur and 6:10 am in Dubai.

Each star page lists its Chandrashtama dates; each rasi page has the full calendar.
