Chitra Chandrashtama Days 2026-2027: Dates & Times

Chandrashtama is read two ways. By Janma Rasi, people born in Chitra follow the Kanni Rasi window, when the Moon passes through the 8th sign from Kanni. Tamil daily panchangams also mark it by star: the day the Moon is in Krittika, the 17th star from Chitra. This page lists both, for every month of 2026 and 2027.

Chitra nakshatra, which falls under the Kanni Rasi used for its Chandrashtama dates

Chitra sits in the Kanni Rasi, so the rasi window below is the Kanni one; the star-level day is the Moon in Krittika.

Chitra Nature: The star of aesthetics, architecture, and brilliant structural thinking.

Deity: Vishwakarma

Krittika starts inside Mesha, the sign the Moon occupies during this rasi window, and runs a few degrees past its end. So for Chitra the star-level day begins inside the rasi window and carries on for about 17 hours after it closes; those extra hours are flagged only by star-based calendars.

Chitra spans two rasis, so the rasi window depends on your pada. Padas 1, 2 belong to Kanni and the tables below use its dates; if you were born in pada 3, 4, your Janma Rasi is Thulam, so pick that pada above for Thulam's dates. The star-level day is the same for every pada. Measured against Thulam's window, the star-level day for pada 3, 4: starts 6 h before the rasi window.

Tarabalam for Chitra

Tarabalam rates any day by the star the Moon is in, counted from Chitra. The count repeats every nine stars, so each of the nine taras comes from three Moon stars. Check the day's star in any panchangam and read its tara below.

  1. Janma (not good): when the Moon is in Chitra, Dhanishta and Mrigashira; the Moon is back in your own star; keep the day light.
  2. Sampat (very good): when the Moon is in Swati, Shatabhisha and Ardra; wealth and gains.
  3. Vipat (bad): when the Moon is in Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada and Punarvasu; obstacles and losses.
  4. Kshema (good): when the Moon is in Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Pushya; well-being and safety.
  5. Pratyak (not good): when the Moon is in Jyeshtha, Revati and Ashlesha; opposition and friction.
  6. Sadhaka (very good): when the Moon is in Mula, Ashwini and Magha; achievement; good for starting work.
  7. Naidhana (totally bad): when the Moon is in Purva Ashadha, Bharani and Purva Phalguni; the weakest tara; avoid new beginnings.
  8. Mitra (good): when the Moon is in Uttara Ashadha, Krittika and Uttara Phalguni; friendship and support.
  9. Parama Mitra (good): when the Moon is in Shravana, Rohini and Hasta; the closest support.

During the rasi Chandrashtama window the tara for Chitra is Sadhaka, Naidhana, Mitra, the same every month.

How these times are calculated

All times are in IST, computed from the Moon's sidereal position with the Lahiri ayanamsa: the Thirukanitha method, the same basis Drik Panchang uses. Vakya panchangams, which many Tamil calendars still print, can differ by around 30 minutes at a star change. Days here run midnight to midnight; panchangams that start the day at sunrise show early-morning changes under the previous date.

Chitra Chandrashtama: common questions

Is Chitra's Chandrashtama the same as Uttara Phalguni's?

By rasi, yes: both follow the Kanni Rasi window. By star, no: Tamil panchangams list Chitra when the Moon is in Krittika and Uttara Phalguni when it is in Ashwini, so their star-level days fall about a day apart inside or next to that window.

Why does my calendar show Chitra under Chandrashtama on only one day?

Daily panchangams list Chandrashtama by star: the day's entry names the stars whose 17th star the Moon is in. Chitra appears while the Moon is in Krittika, about a day, whereas the Kanni Rasi window lasts about two and a quarter days.

Which Moon stars are weakest for Chitra?

Naidhana tara, the weakest, comes when the Moon is in Purva Ashadha, Bharani and Purva Phalguni. Vipat (Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada and Punarvasu) and Pratyak (Jyeshtha, Revati and Ashlesha) are also unfavourable for starting new work.
