Punarvasu Chandrashtama Days 2026-2027: Dates & Times
Chandrashtama is read two ways. By Janma Rasi, people born in Punarvasu follow the Midhunam Rasi window, when the Moon passes through the 8th sign from Midhunam. Tamil daily panchangams also mark it by star: the day the Moon is in Dhanishta, the 17th star from Punarvasu. This page lists both, for every month of 2026 and 2027.

Punarvasu sits in the Midhunam Rasi, so the rasi window below is the Midhunam one; the star-level day is the Moon in Dhanishta.
Punarvasu Nature: Focused on renewal, optimism, and returning to a state of balance.
Deity: Aditi

Dhanishta starts inside Makaram, the sign the Moon occupies during this rasi window, and runs a few degrees past its end. So for Punarvasu the star-level day begins inside the rasi window and carries on for about 13 hours after it closes; those extra hours are flagged only by star-based calendars.
Punarvasu spans two rasis, so the rasi window depends on your pada. Padas 1, 2, 3 belong to Midhunam and the tables below use its dates; if you were born in pada 4, your Janma Rasi is Kadagam, so pick that pada above for Kadagam's dates. The star-level day is the same for every pada. Measured against Kadagam's window, the star-level day for pada 4: starts 13 h before the rasi window.

Tarabalam for Punarvasu
Tarabalam rates any day by the star the Moon is in, counted from Punarvasu. The count repeats every nine stars, so each of the nine taras comes from three Moon stars. Check the day's star in any panchangam and read its tara below.
- Janma (not good): when the Moon is in Punarvasu, Vishakha and Purva Bhadrapada; the Moon is back in your own star; keep the day light.
- Sampat (very good): when the Moon is in Pushya, Anuradha and Uttara Bhadrapada; wealth and gains.
- Vipat (bad): when the Moon is in Ashlesha, Jyeshtha and Revati; obstacles and losses.
- Kshema (good): when the Moon is in Magha, Mula and Ashwini; well-being and safety.
- Pratyak (not good): when the Moon is in Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha and Bharani; opposition and friction.
- Sadhaka (very good): when the Moon is in Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha and Krittika; achievement; good for starting work.
- Naidhana (totally bad): when the Moon is in Hasta, Shravana and Rohini; the weakest tara; avoid new beginnings.
- Mitra (good): when the Moon is in Chitra, Dhanishta and Mrigashira; friendship and support.
- Parama Mitra (good): when the Moon is in Swati, Shatabhisha and Ardra; the closest support.
During the rasi Chandrashtama window the tara for Punarvasu is Sadhaka, Naidhana, Mitra, the same every month.
How these times are calculated
All times are in IST, computed from the Moon's sidereal position with the Lahiri ayanamsa: the Thirukanitha method, the same basis Drik Panchang uses. Vakya panchangams, which many Tamil calendars still print, can differ by around 30 minutes at a star change. Days here run midnight to midnight; panchangams that start the day at sunrise show early-morning changes under the previous date.
Read our editorial policyPunarvasu Chandrashtama: common questions
Is Punarvasu's Chandrashtama the same as Mrigashira's?
By rasi, yes: both follow the Midhunam Rasi window. By star, no: Tamil panchangams list Punarvasu when the Moon is in Dhanishta and Mrigashira when it is in Uttara Ashadha, so their star-level days fall about a day apart inside or next to that window.
Why does my calendar show Punarvasu under Chandrashtama on only one day?
Daily panchangams list Chandrashtama by star: the day's entry names the stars whose 17th star the Moon is in. Punarvasu appears while the Moon is in Dhanishta, about a day, whereas the Midhunam Rasi window lasts about two and a quarter days.
Which Moon stars are weakest for Punarvasu?
Naidhana tara, the weakest, comes when the Moon is in Hasta, Shravana and Rohini. Vipat (Ashlesha, Jyeshtha and Revati) and Pratyak (Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha and Bharani) are also unfavourable for starting new work.
