Mrigashira Chandrashtama Days 2026-2027: Dates & Times

Chandrashtama is read two ways. By Janma Rasi, people born in Mrigashira follow the Rishabam Rasi window, when the Moon passes through the 8th sign from Rishabam. Tamil daily panchangams also mark it by star: the day the Moon is in Uttara Ashadha, the 17th star from Mrigashira. This page lists both, for every month of 2026 and 2027.

Mrigashira nakshatra, which falls under the Rishabam Rasi used for its Chandrashtama dates

Mrigashira sits in the Rishabam Rasi, so the rasi window below is the Rishabam one; the star-level day is the Moon in Uttara Ashadha.

Mrigashira Nature: Symbolizes exploration, curiosity, and a constant search for truth.

Deity: Soma

Uttara Ashadha starts inside Dhanusu, the sign the Moon occupies during this rasi window, and runs a few degrees past its end. So for Mrigashira the star-level day begins inside the rasi window and carries on for about 20 hours after it closes; those extra hours are flagged only by star-based calendars.

Mrigashira spans two rasis, so the rasi window depends on your pada. Padas 1, 2 belong to Rishabam and the tables below use its dates; if you were born in pada 3, 4, your Janma Rasi is Midhunam, so pick that pada above for Midhunam's dates. The star-level day is the same for every pada. Measured against Midhunam's window, the star-level day for pada 3, 4: starts 7 h before the rasi window.

Tarabalam for Mrigashira

Tarabalam rates any day by the star the Moon is in, counted from Mrigashira. The count repeats every nine stars, so each of the nine taras comes from three Moon stars. Check the day's star in any panchangam and read its tara below.

  1. Janma (not good): when the Moon is in Mrigashira, Chitra and Dhanishta; the Moon is back in your own star; keep the day light.
  2. Sampat (very good): when the Moon is in Ardra, Swati and Shatabhisha; wealth and gains.
  3. Vipat (bad): when the Moon is in Punarvasu, Vishakha and Purva Bhadrapada; obstacles and losses.
  4. Kshema (good): when the Moon is in Pushya, Anuradha and Uttara Bhadrapada; well-being and safety.
  5. Pratyak (not good): when the Moon is in Ashlesha, Jyeshtha and Revati; opposition and friction.
  6. Sadhaka (very good): when the Moon is in Magha, Mula and Ashwini; achievement; good for starting work.
  7. Naidhana (totally bad): when the Moon is in Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha and Bharani; the weakest tara; avoid new beginnings.
  8. Mitra (good): when the Moon is in Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha and Krittika; friendship and support.
  9. Parama Mitra (good): when the Moon is in Hasta, Shravana and Rohini; the closest support.

During the rasi Chandrashtama window the tara for Mrigashira is Sadhaka, Naidhana, Mitra, the same every month.

How these times are calculated

All times are in IST, computed from the Moon's sidereal position with the Lahiri ayanamsa: the Thirukanitha method, the same basis Drik Panchang uses. Vakya panchangams, which many Tamil calendars still print, can differ by around 30 minutes at a star change. Days here run midnight to midnight; panchangams that start the day at sunrise show early-morning changes under the previous date.

Mrigashira Chandrashtama: common questions

Is Mrigashira's Chandrashtama the same as Krittika's?

By rasi, yes: both follow the Rishabam Rasi window. By star, no: Tamil panchangams list Mrigashira when the Moon is in Uttara Ashadha and Krittika when it is in Mula, so their star-level days fall about a day apart inside or next to that window.

Why does my calendar show Mrigashira under Chandrashtama on only one day?

Daily panchangams list Chandrashtama by star: the day's entry names the stars whose 17th star the Moon is in. Mrigashira appears while the Moon is in Uttara Ashadha, about a day, whereas the Rishabam Rasi window lasts about two and a quarter days.

Which Moon stars are weakest for Mrigashira?

Naidhana tara, the weakest, comes when the Moon is in Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha and Bharani. Vipat (Punarvasu, Vishakha and Purva Bhadrapada) and Pratyak (Ashlesha, Jyeshtha and Revati) are also unfavourable for starting new work.
