Dhanishta Chandrashtama Days 2026-2027: Dates & Times

Chandrashtama is read two ways. By Janma Rasi, people born in Dhanishta follow the Makaram Rasi window, when the Moon passes through the 8th sign from Makaram. Tamil daily panchangams also mark it by star: the day the Moon is in Uttara Phalguni, the 17th star from Dhanishta. This page lists both, for every month of 2026 and 2027.

Dhanishta nakshatra, which falls under the Makaram Rasi used for its Chandrashtama dates

Dhanishta sits in the Makaram Rasi, so the rasi window below is the Makaram one; the star-level day is the Moon in Uttara Phalguni.

Dhanishta Nature: Represents abundance, rhythmic timing, and community service.

Uttara Phalguni starts inside Simmam, the sign the Moon occupies during this rasi window, and runs a few degrees past its end. So for Dhanishta the star-level day begins inside the rasi window and carries on for about 18 hours after it closes; those extra hours are flagged only by star-based calendars.

Dhanishta spans two rasis, so the rasi window depends on your pada. Padas 1, 2 belong to Makaram and the tables below use its dates; if you were born in pada 3, 4, your Janma Rasi is Kumbam, so pick that pada above for Kumbam's dates. The star-level day is the same for every pada. Measured against Kumbam's window, the star-level day for pada 3, 4: starts 6 h before the rasi window.

Tarabalam for Dhanishta

Tarabalam rates any day by the star the Moon is in, counted from Dhanishta. The count repeats every nine stars, so each of the nine taras comes from three Moon stars. Check the day's star in any panchangam and read its tara below.

  1. Janma (not good): when the Moon is in Dhanishta, Mrigashira and Chitra; the Moon is back in your own star; keep the day light.
  2. Sampat (very good): when the Moon is in Shatabhisha, Ardra and Swati; wealth and gains.
  3. Vipat (bad): when the Moon is in Purva Bhadrapada, Punarvasu and Vishakha; obstacles and losses.
  4. Kshema (good): when the Moon is in Uttara Bhadrapada, Pushya and Anuradha; well-being and safety.
  5. Pratyak (not good): when the Moon is in Revati, Ashlesha and Jyeshtha; opposition and friction.
  6. Sadhaka (very good): when the Moon is in Ashwini, Magha and Mula; achievement; good for starting work.
  7. Naidhana (totally bad): when the Moon is in Bharani, Purva Phalguni and Purva Ashadha; the weakest tara; avoid new beginnings.
  8. Mitra (good): when the Moon is in Krittika, Uttara Phalguni and Uttara Ashadha; friendship and support.
  9. Parama Mitra (good): when the Moon is in Rohini, Hasta and Shravana; the closest support.

During the rasi Chandrashtama window the tara for Dhanishta is Sadhaka, Naidhana, Mitra, the same every month.

How these times are calculated

All times are in IST, computed from the Moon's sidereal position with the Lahiri ayanamsa: the Thirukanitha method, the same basis Drik Panchang uses. Vakya panchangams, which many Tamil calendars still print, can differ by around 30 minutes at a star change. Days here run midnight to midnight; panchangams that start the day at sunrise show early-morning changes under the previous date.

Dhanishta Chandrashtama: common questions

Is Dhanishta's Chandrashtama the same as Uttara Ashadha's?

By rasi, yes: both follow the Makaram Rasi window. By star, no: Tamil panchangams list Dhanishta when the Moon is in Uttara Phalguni and Uttara Ashadha when it is in Magha, so their star-level days fall about a day apart inside or next to that window.

Why does my calendar show Dhanishta under Chandrashtama on only one day?

Daily panchangams list Chandrashtama by star: the day's entry names the stars whose 17th star the Moon is in. Dhanishta appears while the Moon is in Uttara Phalguni, about a day, whereas the Makaram Rasi window lasts about two and a quarter days.

Which Moon stars are weakest for Dhanishta?

Naidhana tara, the weakest, comes when the Moon is in Bharani, Purva Phalguni and Purva Ashadha. Vipat (Purva Bhadrapada, Punarvasu and Vishakha) and Pratyak (Revati, Ashlesha and Jyeshtha) are also unfavourable for starting new work.
